Sadly, our old church building has been irrevocably structurally damaged and must now be demolished. Cyclone Debbie was the final straw and the advice is that it cannot safely be repaired. We bid the old building farewell and move forward.
The Heritage Listing of our Church building was not because of the building itself but rather because the site has housed a Presbyterian/Uniting Church since 1899, and the growth in the church buildings demonstrates the progress of Proserpine. This listing needs to be removed in order for this lovely [but now unstable] old building to be demolished and for us to be able to rebuild. The Uniting Church will continue to stand on the corner of Main and Herbert Streets for years to come and the story will go on.
This Church building has been a part of many memories, all of which are cherished.
We aim to build something new, and in character with our town, whilst keeping something of the essence of the old Church. Currently, our congregation is thinking about what meets our needs going forwards. Many of the community also have strong connections with St James and we encourage you to think about what you would like to see in your new Church building.
If you have a connection with St James, please feel free to email firstname.lastname@example.org and advise of your connection and what you’d like to see in the new building. We look forward to hearing from you.
♥ Blessings, St James Uniting, Proserpine
P.S We are still worshipping in Proserpine each Sunday at 9:30am. Come and find us in the Hall behind the old Church. You are most welcome!
